Earwax Removal

Earwax Removal in Berkshire

As an earwax removal specialist I am trained in the safe and effective removal of earwax from the ear canal. I specialise in both warm water irrigation and micro suction.

If you have concerns with earwax buildup or experiencing symptoms related to excessive wax such as hearing loss, feeling that your ears are blocked, ringing or buzzing in your ears, feeling dizzy or sick, it is advisable to consult with an ear wax removal specialist or an evaluation or treatment.

I use a video otoscope so you can see before and after images. If you don’t have a build up of wax and no further treatment is required, you will simply be charged the consultation fee.

Common Questions

Do I have to do anything before my appointment?

I ask for you to use olive oil drops or spray for three days before your appointment. This softens the wax and will increase the chances of a smooth and successful removal during the procedure.

Does it hurt?

No. It may be a little tender after treatment, especially if the wax has a good grip to the wall of the ear canal. However, if you administer the oil to the ear as instructed, this will help to avoid any sensitivity.

What is micro suction?

Micro-suction is a non- invasive method of ear wax removal. Using a specialised suction device, the ear wax is gently and safely suctioned from the ear canal.

What is warm water irrigation?

Water irrigation gently removes wax by using a low pressure water jet, which is controlled and angled towards the ear canal wall rather than the actual blockage. The wax gently works its way out of the ear with the flow of the water.

How do you decide which method to use?

Water irrigation is generally safe for many people, but there are certain situations or conditions where it would be avoided. Water irrigation should NOT be used;

  • If you have ever suffered from vertigo, general dizziness or Tinnitus
  • had any previous damage to the ear drum such as a perforation
  • there is a history of ear infections in the last 6 weeks
  • there is a history of cleft palate
  • You have hearing in only one ear if that’s the ear being treated
  • taking anti-coagulants or high dose steroids
  • Having radiotherapy of the head or neck

Microsuction may therefore be an effective alternative when irrigation isn’t appropriate. Microsuction isn’t ideal for children, patients who are unable to keep their head still or are prone to unpredictable head movements and anyone who is sensitive to loud noise.

Also depending if you have experienced the treatments before, you may simply prefer one method over the other. I’m happy to accommodate your needs, if there are no contraindications.
